Job Title: Traveller Community Development Worker (Part Time)

Contract term: Permanent - subject to funding

Hours of work: 14.5 hours per week

Salary: €18.55 per hour, with flexibility to be worked over 2 - 4 days as agreed.

Responsible to: Mincéirí Port Láirge CEO

Holiday entitlement: 7 weeks plus public holidays pro rata Is it a number days rather than weeks?

Role Base: The worker will be based at Mincéirí Port Láirge office, Deise House, Poleberry, Waterford City, X91 FX2K. The role also involves outreach to the local Traveller Community

Main purpose of the role

  • To promote social inclusion in the Traveller Community, through effective use of community development principles and practices
  • To engage, empower and build the capacity of the Traveller community in Waterford City to address issues and promote a shared respect for Traveller history and culture through community development initiatives, outreach and office-based work
  • To provide support in relation to the accommodation issues including assistance with advocacy and supporting self- advocacy
  • To liaise with Waterford Council in relation to Traveller accommodation issues and the delivery of the local Traveller Accommodation Programme (TAP)
  • Work to further the aims and objectives of Mincéirí Port Láirge and deliver the work plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development of strategies to address Traveller needs in Waterford and work with the Traveller Community to identify key issues for the community.
  • Support the operations of Mincéirí Port Láirge by engaging with the Traveller community to identify potential leaders and support their capacity to lead and represent Travellers at a local and national level
  • Raise awareness of Traveller issues in Waterford by engaging with the Community through visits, at forums and in groups.
  • Network and build links with other agencies locally, regionally and nationally.
  • Advocate on behalf of Travellers with statutory and non-statutory agencies with regard to Accommodation, Training and Employment and Traveller History & Culture.
  • Submit essential plans and reports of the work to the CEO and Board of Management.
  • Assist in organising events with other members of the team.
  • To participate in Mincéirí Port Láirge Project internal structures as required.
  • To undertake such other duties as are reasonably appropriate to the job.

The job will require travelling to Traveller sites/dwellings throughout the City and occasionally travel to attend regional and national meetings and events.
