Kerry One World Centre (KOWC) is operated by KADE

WHAT IS KERRY ONE WORLD CENTRE?

Kerry One World Centre is a Development Education resource centre. Its main purpose is to encourage and support active global citizenship.

Kerry One World Centre (KOWC) is operated by KADE, Kerry Action for Development Education, Ltd., a registered charity, currently located at 7 Maine St, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Kerry Action for Development Education was established in 1993 by a diverse group which included people active in education & training, business, local media and community development sectors. The common thread was a commitment to justice and development issues, local and global, including the social and economic development of the county and its human resources.

KADE MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to promote a greater understanding among our target groups of the Sustainable Development Goals and wider global development issues and enhance Active Global Citizenship, linking local actions to global issues.

‘Global Justice through Local Education’

WHAT IS DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION?

Development Education is about world development. It is considered to be a ‘process’ which enables people to better understand the world they live in and to take an active part in the development of that world. This process fosters the knowledge, skills and attitudes which promote justice and equality in an intercultural society and an interdependent world. It examines what sustains underdevelopment and what is needed to reach and sustain more equal economic, political, social and cultural development. It is an education involving reflection, analysis and action at local and global levels.

WHO ARE OUR TARGET GROUPS?

Formal and non-formal education, community development and business sectors, predominantly in the southwest.

WHAT DO WE DO?

We establish and support Development Education measures, which will promote the development of a critical awareness across the community of local, national, and international situations based on an understanding of culture, and social, economic, and political processes- which impact on the existence of poverty, social injustice, exclusion, etc. By working with communities, schools, universities, young people and other key sectors in civil society, we aim to mobilise people toward action.

We maintain a resource library and provide on-the-ground support for teachers, trainers and learners engaging with global development issues and issues of social justice and human rights such as climate change and fair trade. We support learners to integrate DE into their activities and we engage directly with the public through events aimed at raising awareness, knowledge and skills.

Our centre functions also as a regional support structure for national DE programmes and participates in European projects and we continue to develop and expand our European Projects and Transnational Mobility Unit. These projects enable us to further our reach in promoting Development Education.
