Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP)

The ICP is the national umbrella body for Psychotherapy in Ireland and a not-for-profit organization. The ICP contributes to public health by encouraging the highest standards of training, practice, and on-going education of psychotherapists. The ICP also promotes psychotherapy as an effective intervention for good mental / emotional health.

Currently, it represents over 1,700 psychotherapists nationwide. It is also the National Awarding Organisation (NAO) for the European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP). ICP acts as a link between those who are looking for psychotherapeutic services and those who provide psychotherapeutic services.

The ICP is an umbrella organisation with four sections / disciplines (Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapies, Couple and Family Therapy – Systemic Psychotherapies, Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy); representing the broadest range of psychotherapists in Ireland. The four sections / disciplines encompass 10 member organizations. Three have one organisation affiliated with it - Psychoanalytic Therapy has seven organisations listed with them.

The National Register of fully accredited psychotherapists is available on the website. All ICP registered psychotherapists have reached a standard of training which is in line with European Training Standards – which involves seven years of training, i.e., primary degree and four years specific psychotherapeutic training.

Mission

The mission of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy is to consolidate and promote psychotherapy as a free and independent profession. We do this by promoting the widest provision of psychotherapy for the public and encouraging high standards of training, practice, and ongoing education of our psychotherapists so as to contribute to public health.
