Remember Us is a unique local community-based group that provides a dedicated social outlet for young people/vulnerable adults with special needs, their families and friends. Remember Us delivers a range of social activities and services, both in its own premises in Balbriggan, Co. Dublin and off site. We cater for members from birth though to adulthood from the Dublin Fingal and surrounding areas.

We are now seeking to recruit the following key part time position (18.5 hours per week) for the post of Youth Worker on a 3-Year Contract (which may be extended beyond 3 years subject to the receipt of further funding):

Title of Post: Youth Worker with Young People and Vulnerable Adults with Special Needs

The Youth Worker will be responsible for the design and delivery of programmes and activities relevant to the social inclusion and personal development of young people and adults with Special Needs. The purpose of the role is to work directly with the young people/vulnerable adults with Special Needs, and their families to create an integrated social environment where they can learn and form friendships, that also supports their development and inclusion as valued members of the community.

Remember Us is a part time two youth worker organisation with supporting CE and TÚS workers, volunteers and Board of Directors.

Reports to: Group Co-ordinator and Remember Us Board of Directors

Location: Primarily Unit 5 Balbriggan Retail Park, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, K32 K002 and the successful candidate will be required to travel to off-site locations for some activities (bus provided).

Essential Qualifications

A professionally endorsed qualification in Youth Work or Special Needs is desired. The candidate must able to demonstrate relevant experience working in a youth setting, preferably with young people and/or vulnerable adults with special needs

The Youth Worker will be responsible for:

  • To work directly with young people/vulnerable adults with special needs and their families by providing relevant needs-based programmes, support and information.
  • Ensuring that all members play an active role in programmes and activities and work towards a model of integration and inclusion, encouraging young people/vulnerable adults with special needs to broaden their horizons and be active citizens in their community.
  • Assist young people/vulnerable adults with special needs to develop their social and life skills, self-esteem and quality of life.
  • Communicate effectively and build positive relationships by developing a rapport with young people/vulnerable adults with special needs and their families, enabling them to work effectively in groups.
  • Support young people/vulnerable adults with special needs and their families to help combat the feeling of isolation and help them integrate into the community.
  • Assist in the development of relationships with the wider community and external agencies
  • Develop volunteer programmes and training to encourage the recruitment of volunteers from the community to assist young people/vulnerable adults in their participation of programmes and activities and social development.
  • To work within the policy and implement the policy procedures of Remember Us to Safeguard the welfare of young people/vulnerable adults and the welfare of others.
  • Carry out administrative duties under the direction of the Group Co-ordinator and Board of Directors.
  • Undertaking additional duties as may be required from time to time.

Hours of Work

The normal working week will be 18.5 hours per week. The nature of this post requires the holder is flexible in working hours to cover the operational times of the service and the centre on a rota basis. This will involve scheduled evenings and weekend work.

The proposed 2 week rolling schedule of working hours is as follows:

Week 1

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Off Duty
  • Thursday 9.00am – 3.00pm
  • Friday 1.00pm – 9.00pm*
  • Saturday 11.30am – 4.00pm*
  • Sunday Off Duty

Week 2

  • Monday 9.00am – 6.00pm
  • Tuesday 4.30pm – 9.00pm
  • Wednesday 4.00pm – 9.00pm
  • Thursday, Friday, Saturday Off Duty
  • Sunday Off Duty

*Hours based on activity being hosted in our home base. Hours may vary if activity is not home based.
* Hours may vary during Easter and Summer camps and will generally be daytime hours due to various off site outings.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • A good knowledge of the issues facing young people/vulnerable adults with special needs and their families
  • Be able to contribute to effective teamwork
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to relate to young people/vulnerable adults with special needs and their families in a variety of ways positively
  • Any other skills, interests, expertise and qualifications that may be used in a youth work setting (music, art, crafts, sports, outdoor activities, health awareness)
  • Good organisational skills as well as effective IT and admin skills

Personal Qualities

  • Be willing and open to undertake training (may fall outside contractual hours)
  • Ability to understand, respect and value the views of young people/vulnerable adults with special needs
  • Be willing to work scheduled evenings and Saturdays
  • Be motivated, enthusiastic, confident

Salary: €19,915 per annum
