Safetynet Primary Care Vision

Safetynet Primary Care is a Medical Charity providing services to those in our society most in need of health care but without access to appropriate care. Safetynet innovatively removes barriers by bringing healthcare to homeless people and vulnerable groups in hostels, food halls and drop-in services and by providing a mobile health service to rough sleepers. Safetynet has developed a significant Migrant Health service providing health assessment screening and GP clinics to vulnerable migrants, refugees and international protection applicants. We advocate for an inclusive health system and work towards integration of our patient’s health care to the mainstream services.

General Job Description

The Registered General Nurse (RGN) will provide nursing services at RGN level across all Safetynet teams, as per service demands:

  • Inclusion Health Hub, Amiens Street Practice (IHH)
  • Migrant Health Team (Mobile Health and Screening Unit)
  • Homeless Primary Care Team (InReach)
  • Migrant Health Team (PA GP Clinics – Eccles)
  • Mobile Health Unit Outreach (MHU) evenings

The position is based primarily in Amiens Street but with a remit involving travel to various locations as identified by Safetynet patient needs.

Duties & Responsibilities

Service Delivery

  • Support clinics in services, providing support to GP, in adaptable working environments
  • Under the clinical governance of respective service, provide nursing services to patients attending the service e.g. cervical check programmes, wound dressings, ear syringing/micro suction, phlebotomy. Safetynet will support with necessary training in these areas if required
  • Work with adult and minor patients
  • Carry out services according to national best practice guidelines in conjunction with Safetynet’s policies and protocols
  • Where appropriate engage patients in health promotion and disease prevention programmes
  • Where needed, work with translators (in person and telephone) to assist with patient care
  • Be aware of intercultural challenges for newly arrived migrants during assessments and treatments Clinical / Professional
  • Practice Nursing according to the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Board (An Bórd Altranais agus Cnaimhseachais na Eireann) and Professional Clinical

Guidelines

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual person-centred care programmes within an agreed framework and in accordance with best practice
  • Work within scope of practice in conjunction with respective service and take measures to develop and maintain the competence necessary for professional practice
  • Maintain a high standard of professional behaviour and be accountable for practice
  • Participate in innovation and change in the approach to patient care delivery particularly in relation to new research findings, evidence-based practice and advances in treatment
  • Be familiar with ethical policies and procedures which pertain to their area of practice
  • Deliver the nursing care of an assigned group of patients within a best practice / evidence-based framework
  • Manage a designated caseload
  • Promote the health, welfare and social wellbeing of patients within our services
  • Respect and maintain the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the patient
  • Provide appropriate and timely education and information to the patient and be an advocate for the patient when appropriate

Administrative

  • Ensure that the care setting is maintained in good order using good practice models, that supplies are adequate and that all equipment is clean and in good working order and ready for immediate use
  • Management of stock ordering processes, when required
  • Ensure that equipment is safe to use and report any malfunctions in a timely manner
  • Assist with ordering of supplies, as required, and ensure the appropriate and efficient use of supplies is made and exercise economy in the use of consumables
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate written and electronic nursing records and reports regarding patient care in accordance with local / national / professional guidelines
  • Provide clinical activity reports for Safetynet management as requested
  • Liaising with other primary healthcare providers in relation to patient care
  • Management and tracking of healthcare records.

Other Responsibilities

  • Undertake other responsibilities commensurate with the role including administration as assigned by the CNM and/or the Medical Director from time to time
  • Undertake the role in a professional manner maintaining a high-quality standard of work, and in accordance with the aims, values and ethos of the Safetynet Primary Care
  • Adhere to Safetynet Primary Care policies and procedures
  • Be self-servicing in terms of word processing, filing, record keeping, database input, administration, collating information and generating reports from Safetynet Primary Care data etc.
  • Participate in internal/external meetings as required
  • Be an effective member of the Safetynet Primary Care team and participate fully in staff meetings and other committees of the Safetynet Primary Care as required

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

  • Registered General Nurse with The Nursing Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
  • Higher education qualification/ training or experience in relevant area (Practice Nursing/ Childhood Immunisations/ Management)
  • A desire to work in a busy, responsive environment
  • An interest in Inclusion health
  • A desire to work with marginalized groups
  • A desire to make positive changes

Desirable:

  • Experience of working with marginalized groups in the health care sector
  • Experience of working in a General Practice clinical setting
  • Experience in Phlebotomy (or be willing to learn)
  • Experience in administering Childhood vaccinations (or willing to learn)
