Research Participants: National Survey on Culturally Responsive Mental Health Care

The CHUMS Study is conducting a nationwide survey of mental health practitioners in Ireland to better understand current practices, barriers, and facilitators of delivering culturally responsive and humble mental health care.

What is the study about?

The CHUMS Study (Cultural HUmility in Mental health Services) is a national research project based at Dublin City University and funded by the Health Research Board. The study aims to develop a mental health care model in Ireland that better understands and responds to the needs of people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Research shows that people from these communities often face more challenges and barriers to accessing care. While cultural awareness training has helped practitioners improve understanding, it has not always led to more effective or fairer care. The CHUMS Study therefore focuses on developing a culturally responsive and humble model of mental health care that works better for everyone.

Who can take part? We are inviting all mental health practitioners in Ireland to take part in a nationwide anonymous survey. The survey is open to practitioners across all disciplines and service settings including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric or mental health nurses, social workers, psychotherapists, counsellors, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dieticians, mental health peer support workers, and mental health advocates.

What does it involve?

  • The survey is anonymous and voluntary
  • It takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete
  • Your responses will help us identify current practices, barriers, and facilitators to culturally responsive care
