Research Participants: People from Ethnic Minority Backgrounds - Experiences of using Mental Health Services

The CHUMS Study is conducting a national study with people from ethnic minority backgrounds in Ireland to better understand their experiences of using mental health services.

What is the study about? 

The CHUMS Study (Cultural HUmility in Mental health Services) is a national research project based at Dublin City University and funded by the Health Research Board. The study aims to develop a mental health care model in Ireland that better understands and responds to the needs of people from ethnic minority backgrounds. Research shows that people from these communities often face more challenges and barriers to accessing care. While cultural awareness training has helped practitioners improve understanding, it has not always led to more effective or fairer care. The CHUMS Study wants to change this by hearing directly from people about their experiences of mental health services in Ireland.

Who can take part?

We are inviting people from ethnic minority backgrounds living in Ireland who have used, or tried to use, mental health services to take part in this study.

What does it involve?

• Taking part in a 45- 60 minute conversation with a member of the research team
• Sharing your experiences of mental health services in Ireland
• Conversations will be conducted in a safe and respectful way, and you can choose how much you want to share
• Your name and identity will not appear in any reports, everything you tell us will be kept confidential
