Moate’s Walk and Talk Community Group invites you to join Africa Day in Moate, a celebration of the rich diversity of African culture within our local community. This is the 3rd year the community group has organised this event, a celebration that gets bigger and better every year. Africa Day is a nationwide event which celebrates diversity, inclusion, friendship and solidarity.
A host of colourful events with an African theme are planned this weekend to celebrate Africa Day.
The celebration spans three days Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th May 2025 with events at various venues. This three-day celebration will immerse you in the heart of African culture.
The Main Event: Africa Day and Street Feast Picnic will take place on
- Sunday 25th May
- Time: 1 - 6pm
- Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park, Moate, Co Westmeath N37 P271.
Everyone is welcome.
- Sounds of Africa: Enjoy performances by Moate's Ubuntu Voices Choir, AfroBeats DJ, Dance and Drumming Workshop with Samba Stew.
- Tastes of Africa: Sample vibrant dishes from across Africa and beyond.
- Voices of Africa: Experience the continent’s rich cultural traditions through spoken word, poetry, intercultural conversation and storytelling
- Traditional Styles of Africa: Discover vibrant colors and traditional dress from across Africa and beyond, there's a Prize for best dressed. Henna Artists and African Hair Braiding.
- Art of Africa: Ignite your creativity at art workshops, guided by talented artists from Art Box Studios over the weekend.
- Outdoor Market: African crafts, fashion, jewellery, hair braiding, henna art and tribal face painting

Africa Day Events From 1pm: Parade of Flags and Walk & Talk, Enjoy the Sounds of Africa with our special guests Moate's Ubuntu Voices Choir. Soak up the atmosphere and dance to tunes with our Afrobeats DJ, Dance Performance and Drumming Workshop. Learn about various African cultures through spoken word, poetry and presentations. See the rich tapestry of traditional fashion & styles from different African nations.

This is a Street Feast community event. Bring a picnic, food to share, a rug, picnic chairs to relax. Sit back and enjoy the atmosphere of this inclusive community event.
About Moate’s Walk and Talk Community Group
Our Walk and Talk Community Group brings together people from over 30 countries, fostering a vibrant, culturally diverse community and providing an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome and has a strong sense of belonging. The Group is supported by New Horizon Refugee Support Group. Since the Group was formed in 2023, as a community-led support group, they have set up a Sanctuary Runners Group, “Ubuntu Voices Choir”, a Community Choir in collaboration with Music Generation Westmeath and Tuar Ard Arts Centre and a very active Failte Isteach Conversation English Group. They also have a very active Volunteer Team and members actively volunteer with various community groups in Moate (Moate Tidy Towns, Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park, The Tuesday Club and at various community events throughout the year) making a meaningful impact by giving back to the community that has welcomed them. We meet every Sunday from 1pm in Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park. Our events reflect our community values of diversity, inclusion, friendship, respect, solidarity, compassion and unity. Everyone is welcome who shares our values, all nationalities, all ages, all abilities.
About Africa Day
Africa Day, celebrated annually on May 25th, is a day to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on 25th May 1963. It also serves as a time to celebrate African unity, diversity, and the progress of the African Union (AU). Africa Day is an opportunity to reflect on the continent's rich history, vibrant cultures, and the challenges and opportunities it faces. The Theme of the Year 2025 is "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.
Today, with all fifty-four countries in Africa becoming independent, in addition in celebrating the creation of the African Union, Africa Day has become an occasion to celebrate the wonderful and diverse cultures of Africa, including its music, art, fashions, unique fabric designs, dance, cuisines, its sporting accomplishments, and technological advancement.
