Background
The journey of girls through secondary education in Sierra Leone is often interrupted by numerous social and economic challenges. Despite efforts by the government and development partners, girls continue to face barriers such as early marriage, teenage pregnancy, extreme poverty, and lack of access to learning resources and safe school environments. According to UNESCO, the secondary school completion rate for girls remains significantly lower than for boys, especially in rural and underprivileged areas (Sierra Leone Education Strategic Plan 2015-2020). These barriers are further exacerbated by social norms that deprioritize girls’ education and limited system of support within schools and communities.

The education of girls in Sierra Leone is disproportionately affected by: Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy, Poverty, Limited School Resources, Lack of a structured Mentorship programme, Safe Learning Spaces, hygiene and wellbeing. This hinders the retention of Girls through secondary education.
