Find out what every student and parent needs to know about starting College
‘Starting College’ information service available for parents and students
An estimated 1 in 8 students drop out of college in their first year, often overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. This year a new service called Pathways is stepping in to guide families through the major transition of starting College.
The service, led by parent of three graduates Joan Broderick, is open for business as the college year beckons – to support families with the questions and issues they are navigating.
The service was set up on foot of the many challenges Joan had faced with her own family. “Once your child turns 18, they’re legally responsible for themselves, but in reality, they still turn to you when challenges arise. Unlike school, there’s no Principal or teacher to step in, and many parents feel unsure about where to get help.
“In 2023, 13% of first-year college students dropped out. Behind each of those cases was a young person who felt overwhelmed, whether by stress, routine, finances, or simply not knowing what to expect or feeling isolated.”
Information that can be provided includes:
- Money – how to minimise costs by knowing what is free, what's discounted and what deadlines you can't miss
- Health and Counselling – discover how to access student health centres and counselling services
- Student Rights – know about learning support, illness, deadlines and accommodation
- Independent Living – life skills and practical self-care strategies to acquire a sense of belonging and ‘find your tribe’.
Webinars, school talks and one-to-one family chats are available.
Coming up there is a free webinar for parents on all they need to know at 7.30pm on Wednesday August 27th. To find out more go to www.pathways.ie.
Founder Joan Broderick is a former college health nurse and access to education coordinator, who has supported students dealing with hardship, disability, and personal struggles. She has also worked as a disability advocate, with a strong focus on independent living and equity in education.
She said her motivation has stemmed from the challenges faced in her own experience. “I’ve lived this journey myself, more than once. If you’re looking for down-to-earth guidance to help you and your student navigate the college transition with more confidence, you’re in the right place.”
The service can be contacted directly at joan@pathways.ie, 087 478 4555, or see www.pathways.ie.
