This workshop will look at different types of losses involved in caring for a child with Life Limiting Illnesses (LLIs) from diagnosis through the progression of the illness, end of life, and in to bereavement. These include anticipatory and disenfranchised grief. The grieving process and frameworks will be described, as well as looking at how different losses can affect the child, their siblings, parents and other family members. Practical and helpful approaches for providing support will be explored. The workshop is suitable for professionals and others who are involved in supporting families caring for a child with a life limiting illness.

Learning outcomes:

On completion of the workshop participants will be able to:

• Show enhanced knowledge of the different losses associated with caring for a child with a life limiting illness.
• Show an increased understanding of the grieving process and frameworks for supporting people impacted by these different losses.
• Show increased awareness of the grief journey of parents and families caring for a child with a life limiting illness, from diagnosis through end of life and in to post-death bereavement.
• Apply the learning from practical bereavement support approaches that are described.
