Invitation to tender: Research Exploring ethnic diversity amongst youth workers

The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) invites research tenders on the Profile and Experiences of Minority Ethnic Youth Workers and Volunteers working in the Irish Youth Work Sector

Both young people and youth organisations report an apparent lack of ethnic diversity amongst staff and volunteers in the youth work sector. Adopting the maxim that “you have to see it, to be it” there is momentum in the sector to ensure that staff and volunteers reflect, as much as possible, the ethnic diversity in the wider population.

NYCI is inviting research tenders to explore this issue. Focusing initially on NSETS youth and community courses the research will investigate how much ethnic diversity there is amongst students that attend youth work courses. It will delve into the experiences of minority ethnic students in both student placements and in sourcing and taking up employment in youth work after graduation. It will also explore the presence and experience of minority ethnic volunteer youth leaders. Finally, it will ask research participants what recommendations they would propose to encourage minority ethnicities to pursue a career in youth work.

A study of this nature is important for many reasons; it provides an evidence base to inform the development of youth work policy and practice, and it also helps inform the youth work response to the specific needs of minority ethnic young people.
