Slí Eile: Invitation to Tender - Strategic Plan

Slí Eile

Strategic Plan for Slí Eile

Slí Eile is a charity that works to help people who have experienced significant mental health challenges to recover and rebuild their lives. We work in three distinctive ways. Firstly, we give people an opportunity of community living gaining life skills and experiencing social supports while recovering. Secondly, people get an opportunity to engage in real life enterprises namely the bakery and organic farm. Finally, we offer people life coaching which enables them to clarify their vision for a good life beyond Slí Eile.

Background to the project

Slí Eile was founded in 2004 by a local woman Joan Hamilton, whose pursuit of a better life for her own daughter who had a mental health challenge led her to search for an alternative to psychiatric hospital. Slí Eile Housing Association was set up in 2006, with the first tenants taking up accommodation in a property in Charleville, Co Cork. They were supported by paid staff and volunteers to take responsibility for managing their own affairs. Cuisine Slí Eile was established as a social enterprise supplying bread and scones to local businesses, as well providing opportunities to experience meaningful work for the tenants.

In December 2012, a new phase of development occurred for Slí Eile when a lease was taken out on Burton Park, a 17th Century manor house and 50-acre organic farm in Churchtown, Co Cork. The farm has gone on to produce award winning produce, as well as hosting a weekly market and community events.

In 2018, the HSE, which had provided Slí Eile with essential support from its early days, conducted a major review of Slí Eile’s operations which resulted in enhanced funding being made available for an expanded programme of activities and additional staffing.

Currently Slí Eile has two separate operating companies, Slí Eile Housing Association and Slí Eile Support services. We are now at an exciting phase in our development and are looking to develop a strategic plan to drive the development of the organisation and examine the integration of those companies.
