Full time Drug and Alcohol Youth Worker (35hrs)

Position

CORE Youth Service is currently inviting applications for the position of Full Time Drug and Alcohol Youth Worker.

St Michael’s Parish Youth Project, t/a CORE Youth Service, is a community based youth work organisation working for the welfare, development & well-being of young people aged 10-24 year-old young people in Inchicore, Dublin 8. We believe that constructive relationships with young people are the heart of youth well-being and development.

CORE Youth Service’s mission is to build trusting and positive relationships with the young people of Inchicore by listening and responding to their needs for safety, trust, engagement and creativity.

We strive for spaces for young people to explore their identity, self-worth and potential.

Core Youth Service is seeking a Full Time Drug and Alcohol Youth Worker to work as part of the Youth Work team in a busy, demanding and dynamic youth work environment and to engage with young people from a variety of backgrounds in innovative and needs based programmes. The post is full time (35hrs) and consists of day, evening and occasional weekend work.

The main focus of the work is to work with young people age 10 – 24yrs effected/impacted by drug and alcohol use and related harm in the wider Inchicore area.

This role includes Detached Street Work, with an aim to reduce the risk of harm to the target group and actively promote alternative pathways. This role will complement the existing youth work team and will collaborate with other organisations for the benefit of the young people.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and attributes

  • An NSETS recognised professionally endorsed qualification in Youth Work or Youth and Community Work
    Or
  • Have worked with young people for two years full time, in a paid capacity, in a youth work setting and have an equivalent professional qualification within the social studies/social care / youth work/education/addiction or community development field.

It is desirable for the candidate have the following

  • Experience in outreach work/detached work/street work would be an advantage
  • Experience/knowledge of working with young people using a harm reduction model.
  • Drugs Theory & Intervention Skills, Addiction Studies, Diploma in Community Drug & Alcohol Work or similar
  • Strong awareness of the policies relating to young people and drugs strategies.
  • Understanding of professional boundaries.
  • Excellent communications and team skills.
  • Proven record of working on own initiative.
  • Creative and innovative thinker.
  • Flexible and young person-centred approach to work.

Responsibilities:

  • Targeted early interventions to delay the onset on drug and alcohol use and / or the involvement in the local drug industry
  • Promote alternative positive lifestyle choices among young people who use or are impacted by drug and alcohol use
  • Engage and establish trusting relationships with young people where they gather, with the aim of reducing risk
  • Explore impacts & alternatives to drug dealing with young people
  • Connect with family and peers of target group
  • Signpost to services that can provide additional supports
  • Increase positive outcomes for young people ages 10 – 24 years in Inchicore
  • Devise alternative programmes to support young people and their families.
  • Encourage young people to actively participate in the design and development/evaluation of programmes.
  • Case manage the presenting needs of young people through a structured, appropriate, practical and caring response.
  • Identify potential opportunities for young people with businesses, educational institutions, and training/apprenticeship programmes.

A probationary period of six months will apply to this position

Youth Worker Salary: CDYSB salary scale in line with experience
