Addiction Response Crumlin is a community-based and community-led organisation which was set up in 1996 to respond to the drugs crisis in the Dublin 12 area. Since its establishment, Arc has had a particular focus on the needs and circumstances of local people in the Dublin 12 area, both substance misuser and those who have been effected by addiction of a family member.

Overall Aim:

To respond to the difficulties that families are experiencing due to family member’s substance misuse.
Assist family members to develop positive coping and responsive skills, so they can address challenging behaviour within the family, and crisis resolution within the family unit.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The post holder shall carry out his/her duties under the line management of the Family Support Worker/Senior Addiction Practitioner.

MAIN DUTIES OF THE VOLUNTEER COUNSELLOR:

  1. To provide focused one to one supports to help families identify needs and to equip them to become more self-reliant.
  2. To promote healthy life skills/life styles in the target group
  3. The ability to act upon one’s own initiative within the context of professional boundaries and accountability and the ability to evaluate the implications of these boundaries.
  4. To act as a support and advocate in relation to crisis intervention
  5. To provide a safe and non-judgemental environment to encourage engagement for the family member
  6. To promote emotional wellbeing/empowerment to build confidence to challenge negative behaviour, manage crisis in a more practical way to encourage a positive outcome.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / APTITUDES

  1. An understanding of working with drug users and their families, with particular emphasis on supporting people through change.
  2. Excellent interpersonal, networking and communication skills.
  3. Excellent listening skills.

FLEXIBLE HOURS

Hours of volunteering will be

  1. Monday 5.30pm to 9.00pm
  2. Tuesday 5.30pm to 9.00pm
  3. Thursday 5.30pm to 9.00pm
