Alan’s particular area of interest in Social Enterprise Business Planning, is addressing both strategic and financial planning, while also addressing the social innovation/culture required locally, to implement effectively and at scale. Alan is working with 2 of Team Hope’s international partners on two social enterprises as follows:
- Setting up an affordable and accessible quality dental clinic in Timisoara (western Romania, Eastern Europe) providing paid-for-services to about 80% of patients and 20% free-services to the poorest of the poor living in this city. The clinic must break-even and remain cost-neutral after the first 12-18 months of operation.
- Establishing a micro-finance Village Savings & Loan scheme for about 150 farmers who are the poorest of the poor in Phalombe (a rural district in southern Malawi, sub-Saharan Africa) to help these subsistence farming families diversify crops due to Climate Change impacts and to develop small-scale agri-businesses for generating income. Most have been refused credit from local “High Street” banks and have difficulty completing Loan forms due to low levels of literacy.
