Job Title: PR and Communications Manager
Contract Type: Full-time, Monday to Friday
Reporting To: Chief Executive
Hours: 37 ½ Hours per week, including some evening and weekend hours

About Macra na Feirme

Macra na Feirme is a vibrant, independent, non-profit, national voluntary organisation for rural young people and young farmers between the ages of 17 and 35 engaged in youth development and training. The organisation consists of a nationwide network of clubs which support a range of activities in agriculture, sport, travel, public speaking and performing arts.

Macra na Feirme is committed to the personal development of members and puts emphasis on social interaction and participation.

Macra na Feirme employs almost 20 staff and involves hundreds of volunteers on a weekly and monthly basis in the delivery of services to members through almost 200 clubs across the country. Our clubs and volunteers are active members of their own rural and local communities, often involved in other community activities such as fundraising for local causes.

About the Role

As PR & Communications Manager you will deliver on key strategic communications priorities within our Strategic Plan 2017-2023, including ensuring that Macra na Feirme is the authentic voice of young farmers and rural young people in Ireland. You will plan and execute all aspects of our national media and public relations campaigns. As one of Ireland’s strongest lobbying organisations, you will manage the communication of our message, image and reputation to key stakeholders across government, media, members and others.

Key Tasks

Public Relations

  • Develop, refine and implement Macra na Feirme’s PR Strategy aligned to our existing strategic plan.
  • Lead the development, writing and distribution of key publications from press releases, articles, reports and several publications.
  • Prepare, collate, edit and disseminate publications from weekly e-newsletters, national press, brochures, annual yearbook, and direct mail campaigns.
  • Initiate, lead and create contemporary messaging & content through multi-media including social media, video, etc.
  • Full Driver’s license and your own car is essential.


  • Develop & maintain excellent working relationships with the media and national and regional level across online, print, radio and television.
  • Manage key relationships with sponsors and supports.
  • Identify opportunities suitable for Macra na Feirme to broaden the appeal of the organisation.
  • Maintain and update Macra na Feirme’s online environments from web to social media.
  • Provide communications training to staff and volunteers that enhances the image and reputation of Macra na Feirme at local, regional and national level.
  • Articulate the key marketing and promotional messages focussed on new member attraction.

About the Person

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • A qualification in communications, journalism or public relations with at least three years post qualification experience.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and deliver strategic priorities.
  • The ability to remain calm, organised and flexible while juggling a wide range of competing priorities.
  • An excellent understanding of social media, with a particular emphasis on youth focused social media.
  • Familiarity with other communications software/resources is an advantage.
  • An interest in young people, rural Ireland or agriculture is an advantage.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team is desirable.
  • A background and network in media & communications is a distinct advantage.
