NATIONAL TRAVELLER ACCOMMODATION POLICY OFFICER

The Irish Traveller Movement (ITM) founded in 1990, is a national membership organisation representing Travellers and Traveller organisations across Ireland. ITM works collectively to bring about change for Travellers in Ireland and represent the views of Travellers and Traveller organisations at a national and international level. We work to challenge racism and the inequalities faced by Travellers

ITM is seeking a dynamic and motivated person to be part of its accommodation team. The role of the National Accommodation Policy Officer is to:

  • Develop and respond to national Traveller accommodation policy and develop policy, submissions on key issues with our membership and wider Traveller community;
  • Coordinate the ITM Accommodation Working Group and other national spaces;
  • Support local Traveller organisations to respond to accommodation crisis and issues affecting the wider Traveller community;
  • Support innovative ways of working and promote best practice between Traveller organisations, civil society and housing groups
  • Work with local and national Traveller representatives on national Traveller accommodation advisory bodies;
  • Provide an evidence-base, including research analysis to inform National Traveller Accommodation Policy;
  • Prepare inputs into Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government’s Traveller accommodation guidelines and documents as necessary.

Essential requirements include:

  • Community development qualification or minimum 3 years’ experience;
  • A strong commitment to community development / human rights and equality;
  • Thorough knowledge of the accommodation issues affecting the Traveller community;
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of local and national Traveller accommodation policies and fora;
  • Experience of working in a Traveller or community development organisation;
  • Understanding of how national network/membership organisations work;
  • Understanding of the support needs of Traveller organisations regarding policy issues;
  • Ability to develop and write policy submissions and articulate ITM’s policy positions at national forums;
  • Willingness to travel throughout Ireland.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
Commencing: July 2019
Work hours: 28 hours per week
