In 1976 the agencies that were working with unmarried parents came together to form the national federation of services for unmarried parents and their children. The aim of the federation was to promote the rights and welfare of unmarried parents and the rights and welfare of their children. The agencies included self-help organisations, adoption societies, maternity hospitals, childcare organisations, health boards and accommodation services.
The federation was renamed TREOIR in 1995 which is the Irish word for direction or guidance. The main activities include provision of information through our National Specialist Information Centre, a wide range of publications on legal rights and welfare entitlements of unmarried families, policy development and training.
