Saint Joseph’s Shankill: Volunteers Needed

Volunteering with a difference – Saint Joseph’s Shankill: Dedicated to Dementia Care

Saint Joseph’s Shankill is the only home in Ireland solely dedicated to dementia care – where feelings matter most.

Our vision is to lead the way in dementia care through innovation, education and community engagement. Developing best practices that others can replicate, where families, staff, volunteers and communities are supported, engaged and empowered to ensure that people living with dementia enjoy the Quality of Life they deserve.

60 people call Saint Joseph’s their home and we also provide a weekly respite service and day care facility. We are a Quality of Life Butterfly Home awarded by Dementia Care Matters.

Join our team of wonderful volunteers. We have a number of different volunteer opportunities:

Activities Volunteers

Help our Activities Coordinator with different activities such as Fit for Life (gentle exercises while seated), our weekly choir, our weekly dance class or a weekly visit from a local crèche.

Administration Volunteers

Help us with our different community projects such as our schools programme (primary school art competition) and other community-based programmes to raise awareness about dementia.

Arts and Crafts Volunteers

If you’re a crafter or a knitter we’d love to hear from you. Many of the people in our care are creative and you’d be helping them bring out their creative side.

‘Buddy’ Volunteers

Meet one of the people in our care once a week to have a chat or go for a walk. Brighten up their day and make moments matter for them.

Cinema Club Volunteers

Calling all film buffs! Our cinema club will take place one Sunday afternoon every month in a dementia friendly environment. People living with dementia in the community and their families are welcome to join us.

Day Care Volunteers

Day Care Volunteers meet and greet the people attending our Day Care service as well as assisting with activities throughout the day and engaging with people in a group or one-to-one. We’re looking for volunteers for at least one day a week (weekdays) either from 10am – 1pm or from 12pm – 3pm.

Day Trip Volunteers

It’s nice to get out and about. Whether it is a day trip to the beach, grabbing a pint in the local, or even a trip to the zoo, you can come too!

Fundraising/Events Volunteers

Assist our Fundraising Manager with the running of our annual fundraising events which include: Strictly for Dementia, Irish Fashion Collective, Golf Classic, coffee mornings and much more.

Gardening Volunteers

If you have green fingers you’re just who we’re looking for! We have lots of courtyards and green spaces that need some care and attention.

Hand Massage Volunteer

Hand massage is very therapeutic and can create a pleasant and relaxing experience for people living with dementia. Volunteers who have experience in this area will provide gentle hand massage to all those who are of greatest need, especially in our later stage lodges.

Information Hub Volunteers

Two Dementia Advisors from the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland hold a monthly clinic in Saint Joseph’s Shankill. To complement this service we would like to start an Information Hub for people living in the community. It will be a place where people can find out more about Saint Joseph’s as well as practical information about living with dementia.

Lodge Volunteers

We have 6 lodges where the people in our care live. You will support the people living in one of our lodges such as having a chat, doing some arts and crafts or just spending some time with them and making those moments matter.

Maintenance and Painting Volunteers

Calling all DIY experts! If you are a bit of a handy man/woman then why not give a few hours to do some maintenance or a bit of painting?

Musician/Entertainer Volunteers

Do you play a musical instrument or are you a singer? Perhaps you’re a magician, a juggler or a ventriloquist or maybe you simply enjoy tickling the ivories. We’d love to welcome you to the volunteer team.

TrioBike Volunteers

Our TrioBike has seating for two people at the front (with seat belts) and is steered by the person sitting on the bicycle part at the back. It’s battery-operated so all that’s required is steering as well as lots of smiles and a bit of chat! It’s a great way to give something back to the community.
