South Dublin County Partnership - Intercultural Centre: Conversational English Tutors

The Intercultural Centre offers a safe and welcoming space for new migrant / refugee communities taking their first steps in literacy, education, integration and identity re-building in Irish society. Non-literate migrant/refugee groups struggle to find their voice and become full, participatory members of their new Irish communities due to a lack of previous formal (or only sporadic) education, limited knowledge of the language and/or the infrastructural systems of their new country. We are located at Unit 4, Oakfield Industrial Estate, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, D22

Volunteers will support adult migrants to learn English through informal conversation either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. Volunteers will be responsible for making new students feel welcome and at ease as they work to improve their English Language skills. Workbooks and other resources are provided to give ideas of topics and questions to support learning.

Volunteers need to have fluent English and good people skills, the ability to judge the needs of learners in selecting conversation topics, and the ability to provide feedback in an encouraging manner.

Minimum Commitment is for 1 hour each week for 3 months – available slots are Monday – Friday from 10am – 12pm or 2pm – 4pm.

Screening for this role will include an application form, informal interviews, references and Garda vetting.
