Volunteer Role: School Speaker

Dublin Simon Community works to prevent and address homelessness in Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan. We provide services at all stages of homelessness and enable people to move to a place they can call home.

Who are we looking for?

As part of the Simon School Programme we regularly visit schools in Cavan, Louth and Monaghan to raise awareness of homelessness and promote the work of Dublin Simon Community. The programme aims to break existing stereotypes and create advocacy among students and their peers. Generally volunteer speakers address either the transition year, CSPE or LCA classes in the school and are provided with all the necessary materials.

Your Role

  • Act as a volunteer ambassador for the Simon Community in talks and events run in Schools and Colleges across Cavan, Louth and Monaghan.
  • Commit to performing numerous school talks throughout the academic year.

What skills and qualifications are we expecting?

  • 18 years old and above
  • Fluent English
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work with Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Public speaking experience
  • Some knowledge of the Irish school system
  • Knowledge of the social context within which Simon works would be an advantage*

* – You will receive induction & training and all the necessary materials prior to any school talks; if you have no knowledge in this area, we will make sure you are fully prepared and have received in-depth training.

When do we need you?

The schedule is flexible and does not require constant work hours. The talk itself takes up to 40 minutes on average. Depending on your availability and arrangements with the schools, your role will take 3-4 hours a week in the mornings/afternoons, however, please keep in mind that the number of talks per week may vary throughout the year.

Screening details:

  • CV
  • Informal interview
  • Identification check (photo ID, etc.)
