Le Chéile Mentoring and Youth Justice Support Services: Youth Mentor

Le Chéile Mentoring and Youth Justice Support Services: Become a Youth Mentor in South Tipperary

Your Time, Your Support, Your Kindness has the ability to change lives!

Becoming a Youth Mentor with Le Chéile, you have an opportunity to empower young people referred by the Probation Service who are either involved in or are at risk of offending.

The role offers a first-hand opportunity to make a real impact in the lives of vulnerable young people by being a positive role model and providing support.

Who we’re looking for?

You don’t need a specialist background or any previous experience, we’re just looking for people from across South Tipperary with a passion to make a difference in their community and a commitment to being a positive and reliable role-model for each young person. To be a bit more specific, we’re looking for volunteers over the age of 21 with diverse backgrounds and different interests. The young people referred to us come from all walks of life, so we’re looking for people that can make a connection and build a positive mentoring relationship.

What’s involved?

Once you’re fully trained, you’ll be matched with a young person between the ages of 12 and 21 and mentoring sessions will take place once a week, depending on availability. These sessions aim to provide support and encouragement through doing activities together like playing pool, going to the cinema, bowling, or just meeting for a bite to eat and a chat. Le Chéile covers all costs; all you give is your time.

Our volunteering is also fully-flexible, meaning you can meet during the day, evenings or weekends. All we ask is that you agree to make a commitment of one to three hours per week in order to ensure the consistency and stability of the mentoring relationship.

What support do we offer?

Before becoming a fully-fledged Mentor, we offer a full training programme designed to ensure that you feel confident and ready before being matched. You will also have the support of a trained coordinator who will be able to offer advice and guidance whenever needed and regular group sessions with other Mentors to learn from their experiences and discuss different challenges. Optional ongoing training is also provided in specialist areas throughout the year.

What will you get out of it?

  • As a volunteer Mentor, you have an opportunity to encourage positive change in the life of a young person and to witness first-hand the impact that you can have.
  • You have a chance to experience new opportunities, meet other Mentors and learn from their stories and skills.
  • If you’re looking to gain practical experience in the social care and youth justice field, Mentoring is a great way to develop your personal and professional skill set.

Recruitment Process.

Our recruitment process includes an application form, interview, reference checks and Garda vetting. Interviews will take place after the closing date and, if successful, full training will commence in March/April depending on availability.
