What is An Síol?
An Síol is a community development programme working in Stoneybatter, Dublin 7. It offers a range of services to the local community, from senior citizen meals to youth education initiatives (see www.ansiol.ie for more information).
What is the volunteer tuition programme?
The An Síol education programme provides free tuition for second level students in the North West inner city Dublin, prioritising Junior and Leaving Certificate students. The students are paired with a volunteer tutor for an hour long one-to-one session on a weekly basis. The tuition takes place in a local school on Manor Street on Monday evenings from 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. Tutors and their students meet in the canteen area of the school and are supervised and supported by An Siol’s education services staff.
Volunteers are asked for commit to between one and two hours a week from October to May. Tuition does not take place during school holidays and on .
All volunteers will receive certified Child Protection training and a reference can be provided.
Subject to Garda Clearance, an informal interview, and the return of two references volunteers will be invited to an induction evening in September to meet An Síol staff and fellow volunteers. Volunteers are matched with students from late September and tuition usually begins in mid-October.
An Síol volunteer tutors are:
- Over 18
- Enthusiastic and enjoy working with young people
- Have a good knowledge of at least one secondary level subject to a minimum of ordinary Junior Cert level
- Understand and emphasize with the stresses of falling behind in school
