VSO Ireland: Urgent call for Education and Health Volunteers

Urgent call for Education and Health Volunteers

VSO Ireland is an international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty and inequality in 24 countries. We are actively recruiting volunteers to join our new Irish Aid funded health and education programmes in Karamoja, one of the most marginalised regions in Northern Uganda. These placements vary in length and have different start dates between now and 2020.

How VSO works

We’re not about delivering quick fixes, but instead focus on long-lasting, sustainable change, that will impact generations to come. Our volunteers collaborate with and mentor local people, helping them to develop the skills they need to lift themselves out of poverty. All programmes are also designed with local partner organisations to ensure they best meet the needs of the local community.

Our girls’ education programme

This project is working to reduce barriers, both inside and outside of school, that prevent girls from accessing and completing primary education. Volunteers are helping to build the capacity of senior teachers to provide guidance and counselling to all children and supporting girls to practice good health and hygiene. They are also supporting community groups to engage with and promote inclusive education.

We need the following volunteers for this programme:

Our maternal and neonatal health programme

This project is focused on promoting and extending health services to pregnant adolescent girls, who are particularly at risk when giving birth, and their babies. Irish volunteers will work side-by-side with Ugandan volunteers to upskill local health workers and help them diagnose and treat sick mothers and babies.

We need the following volunteers for this programme:

What VSO offers volunteers

We provide a comprehensive package of supports to our volunteers, including pre-departure and in-country training and resettlement support. VSO covers all costs, including flights, accommodation, insurance, visa and vaccination costs, and volunteers receive a local allowance while overseas.
