What is the Ambassador Programme?

Schools and colleges across Ireland have a significant need for quality mental health information. Through our new Ambassador Programme, SpunOut.ie would like to harness the power of volunteers to bring peer-to-peer support to young people around the country.

SpunOut.ie currently provides workshops and training to young people, volunteers, and professionals on a range of health and life topics. We are looking to expand the reach of our workshop services by training a group of select volunteers to serve as SpunOut.ie Ambassadors and deliver in-school mental health workshops starting Autumn 2019.

Who should apply to be an Ambassador?

To be a SpunOut.ie Ambassador you must be between 18-25 years of age and have an interest in mental health education and working with young people.

While it is not necessary to have previous experience to participate in the Programme, the following areas will be taken into account in the application process:

  • Comfort speaking and working with groups of young people
  • Comfort presenting on sensitive topics
  • Can maintain an empathetic, non-judgemental approach
  • Interest in mental health and health promotion
  • Experience in mental health advocacy
  • Experience studying or working in psychology or social work
  • Experience with public speaking and/or facilitating groups
  • Experience in youth work
  • Experience as a volunteer
  • Flexibility to attend events weekday morning and afternoons

How will Ambassadors be selected for the Programme?

To join the SpunOut.ie Ambassador Programme, each volunteer is required to complete four training sessions (4 hours each, 16 hours total) of in-person training at the SpunOut.ie offices in Temple Bar, Dublin 2. We will be offering each of the four trainings twice to accommodate various schedules. Travel fare to and from Dublin can be provided for those who need.

Training session requirements

We recommend completing the trainings in order from one to four. However, this is not absolutely mandatory as long as all four sessions are completed.

If you miss more than one hour of the 16 hours of training, you will not be able to progress in the Ambassador Programme.

You can attend trainings from a mix of the July and August Series if necessary in order to complete the full 16 hours.

Will I be an ambassador if I complete the training?

Completing the training sessions does not guarantee selection as a SpunOut.ie Ambassador.

SpunOut.ie staff will be selecting volunteers for the Ambassador Programme following the conclusion of the training period. Each volunteer will also be required to provide feedback, complete assessment exercises, and be Garda vetted. Participation in the Ambassador Programme is completely voluntary and free of charge.

What commitment is involved as an Ambassador?

As a SpunOut.ie Ambassador, you will be trained to deliver mental health workshops to young people in school and college settings. SpunOut.ie will contact you over the course of the academic year with potential workshop opportunities and the event details (school location, day, time, size of the group).

You will volunteer to deliver workshops on an ongoing basis, as it fits with your schedule. There will be a certain minimum amount of workshops you will have to deliver per year to remain in the programme. A minimum of 2 Ambassadors will be required to deliver any given workshop, so you will deliver workshops in pairs or small groups. SpunOut.ie staff may attend to supervise on an ongoing basis. There are no travel fees associated with the Programme; travel will be booked for you ahead of time or reimbursed in full.

What will I get out of being a SpunOut.ie Ambassador?

An Ambassador is entrusted with the highest level of responsibility given to a SpunOut.ie volunteer. An Ambassador represents the organisation and its values, and is a gateway for young people accessing quality health information and support. This requires a high level of trust and accountability.

In return, Ambassadors will receive training from professionals in the areas of mental health stigma, health promotion, managing disclosures, and presentation and public speaking skills. The Programme will provide volunteers with valuable skills and experience to support them in their future careers, as well as increased confidence and peer support.

Ultimately, we hope that volunteering with the Programme will provide Ambassadors with a sense of greater fulfilment by assisting their peers to live healthier lives and decreasing mental health stigma across Ireland.
