POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY
Project Title: An examination of parenting in homeless and post homeless contexts: A social ecological model approach.
Project Description: The UN CRC article 181 emphasises that states must provide appropriate assistance to parents/guardians in their parental role, as primary care givers to their children. In most developed countries, family homelessness is increasing, with an unprecedented growth in family homelessness occurring in Ireland in recent years. Homelessness poses a significant strain on parents as they try to parent in fluid and adverse circumstances. This research will investigate Irish and international parenting, experiences and needs, in homeless and post-homeless situations. It will use a social ecological model approach. As a theory-based framework, this will determine the personal and environmental factors that determine parenting behaviour, and the factors that facilitate/impede parenting behaviour change in homeless and post homeless contexts. Narrative inquiry (in-depth interviews with parents/service providers) will form the methodological basis for the study. The findings will advance a model for the development of progressive policy and practices responses for homeless families in Ireland, and abroad.
