Glenmalure Rural Energy Group are a local Sustainable Energy Community, registered with the SEAI, which formed in the Glenmalure and Ballinaclash rural area in 2018. The group comprises of an enthusiastic bunch of local volunteers who are attempting to increase awareness of the causes and impacts of climate change and how individuals and rural communities can respond. Inspired by communities elsewhere in Ireland, GREG hope to identify the community’s energy needs, and put in place measures that will help improve energy efficiency in local homes, reduce energy costs, and make homes more comfortable to live in. In so doing they hope to explore ways to reduce local community's dependency on fossil fuels.
The official declaration of the Climate and Biodiversity Emergency from Wicklow County Councillors on Monday 29th April 2019 is an encouraging step which should hopefully support the efforts from community groups who are presently active in the area. GREG are currently working to form plans and take local actions with regard to reducing carbon emissions in the local community. The group meet up once a month to find information, ideas and inspiration on their sustainable energy journey and welcome all involvement and support. Come along on Saturday 18th May to find out more and get inspired. GREG: Powering the Community through Energy Action.
