The Sanctuary: Befriending Volunteers

The Sanctuary befriending programme which is run in conjunction with the Dublin North City Mental Health Service is looking for volunteers who wish to extend the hand of friendship to others by carrying out regular visits to adults in a mental health care in Dublin 7.

What it involves?

A group of volunteers meet every week on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening for an hour and share conversations with residents who experience an on-going struggle with their mental health. Joining our Befriending Service is a chance to extend the hand of friendship, provide companionship to residents and help to alleviate social exclusion.

Time commitment

Volunteers are asked for 1 hour a week for a minimum of 12 months.

What’s required for this volunteer position:

  • Be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in wanting to meet and befriend people with a mental health need
  • Friendly, personable, a good communicator and listener.
  • A willingness to accept others as they are.
  • Knowledge/experience of working with people with mental health difficulties beneficial but not essential
  • Be 21 years or over
  • Be willing to volunteer 4 hours a month for a minimum of one year
  • Not expect to receive any payment of any kind
  • Be willing to be an active participant in the support framework which the Sanctuary provides

Befriending volunteers will undergo an interview screening process, Garda Vetting, identification check, reference check, and if accepted, will receive on-going support and supervision from the Sanctuary.

If you are interested in volunteering as a befriender we’d love to hear from you.
