Become a 50808 Crisis Volunteer
We’re currently looking for volunteers to support people in crisis via our 24-hour free textline. As a volunteer, you will learn to support people through active listening, our 5 stage chat framework, and where appropriate, collaborating with texters so they can create a plan for the next steps they can take after the chat ends.
We ask that our volunteers commit to volunteering for 200 hours with us. This can be achieved through a 2 x 2 hour shift each week for 1 year, or 1 x 2 hour shift per week for two years.
While crisis listening is challenging, you will be fully trained and supported along the way. You will also join a wonderful community of like-minded volunteers!
50808 is a free, anonymous, 24/7 messaging service providing everything from being a non judgmental space for people to share what’s on their minds anonymously, to immediate crisis support for those at risk of suicide.
50808 provides a safe space where you will be trained to actively listen to texters. Texters communicate with us via their phone, sending text messages in the usual way, and our volunteers respond via a secure platform accessed on their laptops/computers.
By asking open-ended questions, you will listen and respond with support, helping texters sort through their feelings until you both feel the texter is in a calm, safe place.
AS A 50808 VOLUNTEER YOU WILL:
Train from anywhere. Learn to be a crisis volunteer over 6 weeks, with our self-paced online course. Train from anywhere. In your PJs. On your couch. Wherever!
Gain new skills. You’ll walk away with reflective listening, collaborative problem solving, and crisis management skills.
Feel supported. This is a community. We support each other. We are a big awesome family.
Be there for someone. Once your training is complete, you will be able to put your skills into practice by supporting people when they most need it.
