Become a 50808 Crisis Volunteer
We’re currently looking for volunteers to support people in crisis via our 24-hour free textline. The commitment is 4 hours a week, in either 2 x2 hour shifts or 1 4 hour shift, at a time and day that works best for you. As a volunteer, you will learn to support people through active listening, our 5 stage chat framework, and where appropriate, collaborating with texters so they can create a plan for the next steps they can take after the chat ends.
50808 is a free, anonymous, 24/7 messaging service providing everything from being a non judgmental space for people to share what’s on their minds anonymously, to immediate crisis support for those at risk of suicide.
50808 provides a safe space where you will be trained to actively listen to texters. Texters communicate with us via their phone, sending text messages in the usual way, and our volunteers respond via a secure platform accessed on their laptops/computers.
By asking open-ended questions, you will listen and respond with support, helping texters sort through their feelings until you both feel the texter is in a calm, safe place.
Volunteers work remotely, anywhere with a computer and secure internet connection. We ask our volunteers to commit to 4 hours per week and complete a total of 200 hours.
Our 50808 Volunteers complete the online application form, successfully complete the 30-hour online training course and are subject to reference checks and Garda vetting.
AS A 50808 VOLUNTEER YOU WILL:
Learn skills. In 30 hours, you’ll walk away knowing active listening, how to approach a range of issues nonjudgmentally, and crisis management. (These are skills that will help in your personal relationships too!)
Train from anywhere. In your PJs. In a coffee shop. Wherever!
So impressive! Our Volunteers highlight the training on their CVs when interviewing for jobs, applying to university, and building their LinkedIn profiles.
Level up. Earn volunteer leadership positions. Get the first look at internships and job openings.
Hone your skills. Work alongside volunteers who are also social workers, nurses, therapists, paramedics and psychologists to sharpen your active listening skills!
Feel supported. This is a community. We support each other. We are a big awesome family.
