The Solas Project: Full time volunteer at The Club

ABOUT SOLAS PROJECT

At The Club we provide a purposeful activity in a secure environment in an attempt to meet the physical, emotional and intellectual needs of the children who are specifically target children at risk of early school leaving due to social and educational disadvantage.
 
We cater for 35+ children (aged 5 – 12 years) in three locations in Dublin 8. The Club strives to be a home away from home sitting around a table to have a meal, helping with homework, and doing a fun activity together.

What's involved in this role?

  • Getting to know the children, building up rapport and having fun with them, 1-1 and in groups.
  • Supervising mealtime, activity time and motivating the children to participate and engage with the programme.
  • Organising and initiating activities and free play for the children.
  • Preparing and serving food for the children.
  • Ensure that the values and ethos of the project are reflected in a consistent manner in all activities.  
  • Cleaning up the programme space on a daily / weekly basis.

  • Can relate to children and will gently encourage them to engage with the programme and enjoy it.

  • Does not take him or herself too seriously but is serious about making a difference in the lives of these children.

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: 4 to 9 months  
START DATE:  2021 – 2022 flexible  
HOURS REQUIRED: 10.30 – 6.30pm Monday – Thursday.
EXPENSES: Option of lunch and travel up to a capped amount covered.
 
WHAT EXPERIENCE WILL YOU GAIN?

  • Working with young people from an area with high social need is rewarding in many ways, from seeing the change that you can make by being a key role model in their lives to creating fun with the children on a daily basis.  
  • This is an opportunity to build up your skills in leadership, conflict resolution and managing challenging behaviour working one on one and in larger groups with children who have high emotional and intellectual needs.  
  • You will be working as part of a larger international team of volunteers and teamwork is vital to what we do. We aim to treat each other equally and fairly as we live out our values of love, hope, justice and joy!
