Community Mothers Roscommon Programme: Community Mother Volunteers
The Community Mothers Roscommon Programme is a free service available to parents of young children. It is funded by Healthy Ireland and the funding is administered by Roscommon CYPSC. The aim of the programme is empower and support parents who have children in the age group of 0-5years, by providing peer to peer volunteer support. Support is available to parents both antenatally and postnatally also. Community Mothers is normally a home visiting programme however due to Covid -19 visits are now “virtual” and are facilitated over the phone or via Zoom video call. The support and empowerment of parents is based on the best practice guidelines as outlined in MyChild.ie series of publications published by the HSE. Currently this information is shared by local Public Health Nurses (PHN’s) with families. Community Mothers follow this guidance too as it is part of their training. Volunteers also complete Tusla’s Child Protection Training, which can be completed online. Volunteers will be interviewed and if successful they will then be garda vetted through Boyle Family Resource Centre. Successful applicants will be supporting the development of skills of parents of young children from a variety of backgrounds, with a focus on health care, nutritional improvement and child development.
Community Mothers Roscommon will link in with both Boyle and Ballaghaderren Family Resource Centre’s and Roscommon Children and Young Peoples Services Committee (CYPSC) at local level, for any additional supports identified as needed by volunteers while out on visits. The main sources of referrals into the programme will be through local PHN’s, word of mouth and self-referrals.
