Cheshire Ireland is seeking to appoint a volunteer Chairperson who will lead and implement Cheshire Ireland’s vision that all people using Cheshire Ireland services are supported to live their best possible life.

Cheshire Ireland provides individualised, person-centred supports to adults with physical disabilities and neurological conditions in Ireland. These services are provided to people in a variety of settings including residential services, respite services and in the homes of people living in the community. The organisation is primarily funded by the HSE through section 39 of the Health Act 2004.

The Role

The Chairperson is central to leading Cheshire Ireland’s vision. It is essential that the role operates in a manner that is consistent with Cheshire Ireland’s values and strives to achieve excellence and continuous improvement throughout the organisation.

The primary purpose of the role of the Chairperson is to preside over the Board Meetings of Cheshire Ireland.

The Chairperson will be responsible for ensuring that the operation of the Board is in compliance with all relevant governance requirements.

The role also involves a range of responsibilities as follows:

  • To chair board meetings as per Cheshire Ireland’s constitution.
  • Plan meetings and set the agenda in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and with administrative assistance from the Executive Assistant.
  • Provide leadership to the board of directors and ensure it is effective in its operation.
  • To guide Cheshire Ireland to the forefront of the sector and to ensure its stability, excellence, and prominence in line with HSE reform strategies.
  • To lead the organisation in the reform of the Physical Disability sector in partnership with our funder the HSE
  • Ensure that decisions made are consistent with the strategy and values of Cheshire Ireland and that they are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with the CEO and other key stakeholders.
  • Line manage the CEO and undertake their supervision and performance appraisal, or delegate to other such persons that may be nominated to do so.
  • Represent the board of directors of Cheshire Ireland.
  • Maintain accountability for compliance with stakeholder requirements (regulatory or otherwise).
  • Sign and certify all relevant documentation on behalf of Cheshire Ireland as required.
  • Maintain, continue and strengthen Cheshire Ireland’s relationship with various key stakeholders.

Qualities and Skills

  • Experience of chairing a board or previous board membership.
  • Corporate governance experience and expertise.
  • Understanding of the roles/responsibilities of a board of directors.
  • Background in a senior management role or relevant management experience.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Impartiality, fairness and the ability to respect confidences.
  • Ability to ensure decisions are taken and followed-up.
  • Good timekeeping.
  • Tact and diplomacy.
