Navan Community Sponsorship: Volunteer Opportunities

Navan Community Sponsorship will provide a holistic support to the Syrian Family selected by the Department of Justice and Equality so that they can reach their full capacities and enjoy living a happy, independent life in Ireland.

Community Sponsorship is the Canadian model of re-settling families and people who have had to flee from their home to protect their safety, and the safely of their family.

With the Irish Red Cross providing practical training, advice, guidance and support to the Community Sponsorships Groups (CSGs), the Community Sponsorship Ireland programme offers communities a chance to take responsibility for the integration of refugees into their area. From finding the family a guaranteed home for two years to helping them set up a bank account, learn English and register children for school, the group becomes a vital support network for the family.

The first area in Ireland to welcome and support a Syrian Family was in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath. Dunshaulghin has had a wonderful experience, and the family has said, ‘’the love and the support of the community made us feel at home from the very beginning. We are never homesick. The town is amazing. It's so small and cosy. It's easy to make friends.’’ Read here to learn more about their experience. Mary Coffey, a local GP who spearheaded the Kells Community Sponsorship Group, said that welcoming the Syrian family to Ireland last September has been one of the most fulfilling responsibilities of her life.

“I think it’s one of the most important things I’ve ever done in my life. I feel something in my life and in my person has expanded because of it. It was no burden on anybody, we’re getting back far more than we’ve put into it”, she said. Now members of the Navan community are coming together to support another family.

There are a range of opportunities to put your skills to use to support this family. This could range from a friendly cup of tea with the family, home decorating, fund raising, transport, translation, knowledge sharing, to assisting with community integration by welcoming them to a local group. It can be a long or short term commitment, and with chosen level of engagement.

We welcome all levels of contribution and engagement. To express your interest in this group, or for more information please email
