Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland: SHINE - Care & Activity Volunteer

Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland

Make this summer one to remember by volunteering with SHINE!

Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland (SBHI) is looking for enthusiastic and caring individuals to volunteer on SHINE 2020, our summer independence training programme. SHINE (Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland Nurturing Empowerment) is for teenagers and adults with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus from all over the country.

The programme gives participants the opportunity to develop their independence, confidence, and social skills in a safe, encouraging and fun environment.

The role of a care and activity volunteer

Volunteers are responsible for encouraging and supporting participants to take part in fun activities; working alongside nursing staff and occupational therapists in promoting independence skills, and carrying out personal care duties, while making the week a fun one for all involved.

What you should expect

SHINE 2020 is taking place in various locations in July & August over four separate weeks. Volunteers must commit to completing one full week programme.

All shortlisted applicants must attend an interview in March or April and all successful applicants must undergo a Garda background check. Volunteers’ accommodation, food and activities will be provided by SBHI.

What training will you receive

Experience is not essential as volunteers will receive full training from SBHI’s professionally trained Respite and Recreation staff in personal care, patient moving and handling, and disability awareness.

About SBHI

We are a national organisation supporting more than 2,000 people who know Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus to be a reality in their lives. We work to increase awareness about these conditions, as well as the essential funds which ensure that our unique service is sustained. Around 40 babies are born with Spina Bifida each year in Ireland - which is one of the highest incidence rates in the world – and 1 in 1,000 live births are affected by Hydrocephalus.

Volunteer Testimonials

“A week on SHINE summer camp is like no other. Prepare to be challenged, to laugh like never before, and above all else to make some genuine lifelong friends! I suppose the most rewarding part of volunteering there is seeing the progress of the participants and watching them achieving their goals and dreams, and the feeling that you have made a difference in someone's life”.
