Developing your Trauma Toolkit: Online Workshop

Two-Day comprehensive workshop providing a thorough understanding of what trauma is and how to engage with it safely

Due to the current government-issued instruction to close all schools and colleges in the fight to curb the spread of COVID-19, IICP College has successfully transferred its programmes to online delivery. This method will remain in place until the Irish government determines otherwise. Irrespective of the format, delivery of our teaching remains on the cutting edge of best practice in counselling and psychotherapy education and training

“Everyone has a right to have a present and future that are not completely dominated and dictated by the past”- Karen Saakvitne. Working with the often confusing and challenging aspects of trauma can leave a therapist feeling baffled and de-skilled. Learning about some of the neurological aspect’s trauma holds is essential in terms of working effectively with trauma as are interventions that address these aspects. Drawing from two models of trauma work; the triune brain and polyvagal theory and taking a somatic approach this workshop will explore both features.

Course Content

  • Become aware of the key components of psychological trauma;
  • Be able to identify the many sources and symptoms of trauma;
  • Learn about the three phase/stage approach to working with it and the therapist’s role in each;
  • Understand the Fight/Flight/Freeze responses;
  • Gain an appreciation of trauma’s brain-body link & the relevance of a somatic/body-based approach to working with it;
  • Recognize some dynamics of attachment trauma;
  • Learn about the importance of regulation & how to use it in therapy;
  • Understand the importance of the therapeutic relationship & our role in it using a polyvagal lense
  • Learn some stage-specific practical skills and interventions

Who Should Apply:

This workshop is for mental health practitioners who are working with/interested in working more with trauma. Psychotherapy students are very welcome, but it is advisable that students who have yet to start working with clients and therapists who have never worked with trauma should complete the ‘understanding trauma’ course first as assessment and evaluation as well as working safely with trauma are covered more extensively. It is also suitable for people who have completed the ‘understanding trauma’ workshop as exercises covering the three stages of trauma rather than just stage 1 will be provided and worked through.

The college will issue a certificate of attendance. CPD: 12 Hours
