Immigrant Council of Ireland’s Integration Manager selected as prestigious Obama Foundation Scholar

The Immigrant Council of Ireland has welcomed the announcement by the Obama Foundation that Teresa Buczkowska, Integration Manager at the Immigrant Council of Ireland, will be part of its fifth cohort of Obama Scholars. This is the first year that a representative from Ireland has been selected as a scholar.

Each year, the Obama Foundation selects 20-30 emerging leaders from around the world to study at either Columbia University or the University of Chicago for the academic year. Ms. Buczkowska is one of twelve scholars that will complete a nine-month residency at Columbia University. This cohort will participate in Columbia World Projects, an initiative that mobilizes researchers and scholars from across the university to work with governments, organisations, businesses, and communities to find solutions for real-world problems.

In her role as Integration Manager at the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Ms. Buczkowska is focused on building migrant leadership as a long-term strategy for addressing inequality, and strengthening democracy through migrants’ participation in policy decisions that impact their lives.

Commenting on her selection as an Obama Scholar, Ms. Buczkowska, said “'I feel very honoured to be recognised for my work on enhancing migrant democratic participation by the Obama Foundation. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet and learn from the most inspiring activists, academics and leaders for social change in one of the most imagination-stimulating places – New York City. I am looking forward to the next nine months of learning and expanding my knowledge and practice on how to strengthen our democracy by including migrants in decision-making processes.”

Also commenting on the announcement, Valerie Jarrett, Obama Foundation Chief Executive Officer, said “The Obama Scholars program provides students with the unique opportunity to give and gain insight into the work that fellow young leaders are driving in their communities while speaking to the intersectionality of their efforts through collaboration. We are eager to welcome the new cohort of Scholars to the Foundation family–a network of changemakers tirelessly working for a more equitable future.”

The Obama Foundation Scholars program is designed to inspire, empower, and connect emerging leaders with the tools they need to make their efforts more effective and impactful across their global communities. Since its inception in 2018, the program has served 125 young leaders from 55 countries. To learn more about the 2022-2023 cohort, please visit obama.org/scholars.
