Eurodesk Ireland, a free information service for young people seeking to volunteer, work, study and travel in Europe, is encouraging 18–20-year-olds in Ireland to apply for free rail travel passes as part of the EU-funded DiscoverEU initiative.
Applications are welcomed from today (12.10.2021) on the DiscoverEU website and will close at 11am, on Tuesday, 26th October. Working with youth organisations throughout Ireland, Eurodesk Ireland is on hand during the application period to provide reliable advice and support on accessing this opportunity.
“Having the opportunity to travel alone or with friends for the first time when you turn 18 can be such a significant experience, it’s so important that we make that opportunity available to as many young people from Ireland as possible,” said Eurodesk Ireland Coordinator, Malgorzata Fiedot-Davies. “This is a valuable opportunity for young people to expand their comfort zones by exploring the rich cultural heritage and history of our European neighbours and develop openness to other cultures.
“Eurodesk Ireland provides information and support to young people looking to volunteer, work, study and travel in Europe all year round, and we’re ready to answer queries on the application process and to advise the young people selected on their travel plans for the European Year of Rail 2021. Whether they need information on travel destinations, budget accommodation or practical tips for travelling without their family for the first time, our network is here to help.”
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, eligibility has been extended to include all those born between 1st July 2001 and 31st December 2003, inclusively. In addition to a free rail pass, young people travelling from Ireland to mainland Europe can apply for a free return flight to a chosen destination to begin and end their rail journey.
Launched in 2018, DiscoverEU empowers young people to take advantage of free movement around Europe to build confidence in their language skills, develop independence, and connect with people across Europe. Since its launch in 2018, almost 70,000 young people across Europe have been awarded free travel passes.
Successful applicants to the DiscoverEU initiative will be eligible for free rail travel for up to 30 days between the 1st March 2022 and 28th February 2023.
