Belong To Primary 2024 - Key Survey Findings

Belong To Primary 2024

According to new research, primary school staff across Ireland overwhelmingly support being LGBTQ+ inclusive for their pupils – with 90% believing it is important for those working in primary schools to know about LGBTQ+ inclusivity. Some 80% feel comfortable with a pupil coming out to them as LGBTQ+.

This is just one finding revealed in Belong To Primary: New Foundations for LGBTQ+ Inclusivity in Primary Schools - a new research report on the attitudes, views and professional needs of primary school staff.

Belong To conducted this new research in partnership with the School of Education, University of Limerick (UL), with over 1,000 respondents. The research was funded by the Irish Research Council.

The survey findings show an overwhelming willingness among primary staff to be LGBTQ+ inclusive, but reveal a lack of knowledge and skills needed to deliver fully inclusive practice for their pupils.

When we look at the relationship between willingness and practice, the answer is clear – confidence is key. The research shows that those who are confident in planning LGBTQ+ inclusive lessons are far more likely to put this into practice than those who do not feel confident in their knowledge of LGBTQ+ inclusive practice.
