UNICEF: Somalia & Horn of Africa Hunger Crisis

Famine is Looming in Somalia & the Horn of Africa

Malnutrition has reached crisis levels across the region. In Somalia alone 1.5 million children – nearly half of the under-five population – are already suffering from malnutrition. Of these, 338,000 children are suffering from the most dangerous form of malnutrition – Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).

Today children in the Horn of Africa are dying because they do not have enough food. They are dying because they do not have access to clean drinking water. No child should die from an easily preventable cause.

With Somalia on the brink of famine and neighbouring countries teetering towards catastrophe, the Horn of Africa is in urgent need of YOUR help.

Donate now and send life-saving food, clean water and medicine to children living through disaster in the Horn of Africa.

Explosion of Child Deaths Imminent

Right now, across Somalia and the Horn of Africa more than 20 million people are in need.

The region has suffered from four failed rainy seasons in the past two years, which resulted in widespread crop failure and drought.

With the native crop destroyed and spiraling fuel and food prices, families in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia can no longer afford the basic foodstuffs they need to survive.

The war in Ukraine has also been detrimental to the lives of families in the region. Somalia alone imported 92% of its wheat from Russia and Ukraine – but supply lines are now blocked.

Help Send Emergency Aid

The Horn of Africa is facing unprecedented levels of hunger. Millions of children are battling hunger and illness.

This year, three times as many children have already died from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) compared to the whole of the previous year in some of the worst affected areas in the Horn of Africa. Unfortunately the situation is likely to get worse, with more children needing help.

You can help provide emergency food, water and medicine to children in need, but you must act now.

Please donate today to our Somalia and Horn of Africa Appeal and send life-saving aid to children.
