Original Gerard Byrne painting worth up to €10,000 up for grabs as part of art raffle
— Funds raised will support SCOOP Foundation education programmes in direct provision centres and Iraqi displacement camps —
A framed original oil painting by internationally acclaimed artist Gerard Byrne is up for grabs as part of a new art raffle launched today (11.10.21) by charity organisation SCOOP Foundation. The painting – ‘The Artist on the Roof’ – is valued between €8,000-€10,000, and was painted by Byrne during the first lockdown, from the rooftop of his gallery. It is part of his ‘Pause for Harmony, Art in Lockdown’ collection.
The funds raised from the raffle will go towards supporting SCOOP Ed, which provides educational programmes for young people living in direct provision centres in Ireland and in the Bajed Kandala camp in Iraq. A percentage of the funds raised will also go to SCOOP’s ‘Artist Fund’ which funds initiatives like the Artist Residency Programme, which aims to support an aspiring artist living in direct provision, who is interested in developing their arts practice.
Through the collaboration SCOOP Foundation, with the support of Gerard Byrne, hope to raise up to €35,000.
Additional Prizes and Live Events
Alongside the painting, runner-up prizes in the raffle include a framed limited-edition print of ‘The Artist on the Roof’ (worth €550) and tickets to SCOOP’s annual Christmas dinner and auction event ‘Better than Socks’ (worth €170).
In advance of the raffle, which will take place online on Thursday, 28th October 2021, people will have the opportunity to view the artwork and purchase raffle tickets, at two in-person events, including at:
- An exhibition and event at 7pm on Wednesday, 20th October 2021 at The Gerard Byrne Studio, 15 Chelmsford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.
- An event at 7pm on Wednesday, 27th October 2021 at Dig In art diner, Camden Street, Dublin 2.
Both events are open to the public to attend, no advance registration is required and a free glass of wine on arrival will be offered to all attendees.
Commenting on the art raffle, Andy Sweeney, cofounder of SCOOP said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Gerard on this raffle. His work is exceptional, and we know how lucky we are to get our hands on this painting. Gerard kindly donated a print to our auction event last year and it sold for over €3,000 – so we know how talented he is, and how sought after his work is.
“Our education programmes and artist fund form some of the most important work we do at SCOOP – the funds raised from the raffle will support these programmes, which will help both the personal and academic development of young people living in displacement camps and direct provision.”
Also commenting on the collaboration, artist Gerard Byrne said: "I'm excited to be collaborating with the SCOOP Foundation and to be playing my part in raising much needed funds for SCOOP's worthy art programmes. It's a human need to be able to express ourselves, and art is an extraordinary way to do so. I believe it's important to share, and I'm thrilled that my artwork could make a difference and provide the tools and the motivation to fulfil such needs for young people living in direct provision centres and displacement camps."
