At a time when we are being asked to cover our faces, for good reason, we wanted to remind you to ‘Share a Smile’.
Visual cues such as facial expressions and lipreading are the foundations for conversation for those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Covering the mouth often creates a barrier and can lead to communication breakdown. The aim of our campaign is to demonstrate the communication challenge caused by face coverings. We want to show support to those impacted by Deafness or Hearing Loss to help reduce the feeling of isolation, loneliness and stress.
We are encouraging people to take a smiling selfie, ideally wearing a facemask, to demonstrate the challenge of seeing people’s emotions, facial expressions and lips while wearing a mask. For over 300,000 in Ireland affected by hearing loss, lipreading is a natural way to assist with conversation. Face coverings have been shown to reduce speech clarity and can make communication extremely difficult.
Chime is campaigning for the Government to accept transparent face shields as an alternative to face masks to assist those who rely on lipreading. We are also encouraging any person with hearing loss who needs support to reach out for assistance. Chime’s support line can be contacted on 1800 256 257, email: email@example.com, or text 087 922 1046.
Using #ShareASmile, nominate a min of 3 people to take part. Text CHIME to 50300 and donate €4 (€3.60 will go to Chime) so that we can continue to provide advice, support and care to those impacted by Deafness or Hearing Loss. You can also donate online here.
