About this event
The Handbook for Education Professionals 1st edition was first written in 2014. This 2nd edition was necessitated by the need to get from the teachers and other stakeholders in the Education sector information on how they would like us to work with them to advance FGM work in schools in Ireland. This is because we are conscious of the important role played by teachers in children’s lives. The contact hours spent with children means that a teacher is best placed to know if something is wrong and hence the need to engage teachers effectively to end FGM through this 2nd Edition for Education Professionals.
AkiDwA is organising a launch of the 2nd Edition for Education Professionals in Dublin City University, St. Patrick’s Campus, on Tuesday the 7th of February 2023. This is a very significant week for our organisation as the Zero Tolerance Day Against FGM is marked on the 6th of February each year hence we have chosen to launch this handbook as part of our commemorations this year.
Ireland’s first FGM conviction in January 2020 reminds us of the hidden nature of FGM. AkiDwA is concerned that many girls are at risk of this harmful practice more than ever. To raise awareness and stimulate discussion on this issue during the launch of the 2nd Edition in Dublin, there will be an ‘Explainer’ by Dr Caroline Munyi on various themes covered by this latest edition of the handbook and what truly sets it apart from its predecessor, the 1st edition.
