National Disability Authority: Online Public Meetings, Online Survey & Accepting Public Submissions

This item has expired, and will soon be unavailable for viewing

The National Disability Authority (NDA) has recently been given responsibility to report on the operation of the Irish Sign Language (ISL) Act 2017 to Government on behalf of the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.

To understand and report on how well the Act is working for ISL users, the NDA wants to know about your experience of accessing public services through Irish Sign Language and your rights under the ISL Act. We will be holding online public meetings, inviting you to respond to an online survey and accepting public submissions, so that we can understand your views.

Public meetings: There will be three public meetings, which will all be accessible for ISL users. The meetings will be:

  • Open attendance: Wednesday 3 March, 10-12am (Captioned and ISL/English translation)
  • Open attendance: Thursday 4 March, 5:30-7:30pm (Captioned and ISL/English translation)
  • ISL only: Friday 5 March 3-5pm (No English translation for this meeting)

To register to attend a public meeting, please email HCOLeary@nda.ie providing the following information:

  • The meeting you would like to attend
  • Your name
  • Whether you are joining as an individual or from an organisation
  • If you have any additional accessibility requirements

If a very high number of people register to attend, we may need to limit numbers, so please only register for the meeting you expect to be able to attend.

For those wishing to attend the ISL-only meeting, please note that the meeting will be recorded to enable translation into English for NDA staff afterwards. The recording will be shared with an interpreter but confidentiality will be maintained and the recording will be deleted after interpretation has been completed.

Public Survey and Submissions: A survey will be coming soon for you to tell us your views on the ISL Act and your experiences of accessing services through ISL. The survey link will be published on at www.nda.ie/isl  and on social media, as well as communicated to Deaf community groups and relevant organisations. We will be accepting public submissions and inviting other ways for you to provide your feedback, more details to be provided soon.

You can also sign up to receive the survey link, by emailing HCOLeary@nda.ie and noting that you would like to be emailed about the ISL Act survey.
