Longford Women’s Link (LWL) is an organisation based in Longford Town which focuses on identifying and addressing key inequalities that prevent women in Longford achieving their full social and economic potential. The organisation now wishes to recruit a:

Programme Mentor

The purpose of the Programme Mentor role is to manage the retail mentoring programme (supported by the Ulster Bank Skills and Opportunities Fund) at LWL’s newly established charity furniture enterprise. The role will also provide additional support and encouragement to programme participants who are using LWL’s services to assist them in accessing further opportunities (education, training, employment, enterprise) to help them to reach their full potential.  The role will involve the recruitment and management of programme participants, mentoring and provision of 1:1 support as well as liaising with relevant external agencies.   The Programme Mentor will ensure compliance with all of the relevant legislation as well as retail standards while also adhering to the ethos of LWL.

The position will be part-time (21 hours per week Monday-Saturday) with flexible hours. The salary for this position is commensurate with experience.  This is a fixed purpose contract until June 2018 – the duration of the programme.  The successful candidate will be required to go through the Garda Vetting process.

Role of Programme Mentor

Mentoring is ‘a mutually beneficial and purposeful relationship in which an individual gives time to support another/others to enable them to make changes in their life’ (Mentoring Foundation)

Therefore the Programme Mentor will help to provide additional support and encouragement to people using our services, supporting them to make a success of education and work experience. The successful candidate will work closely with the LWL Charity Enterprise Manager and LWL’s Education and Training Manager.

Person specification

The ideal candidate will have

  • A qualification in enterprise or community development or a related field
  • Experience of managing a diverse team of people
  • Experience/knowledge of working with and supporting individuals from disadvantaged/socially excluded communities, those who are most distant from the labour market experience working with volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient in all aspects of MS Office
  • Experience and/or knowledge of the Community and Voluntary sector would be an advantage
  • Retail experience is not essential but would be a distinct advantage.

The ideal candidate will be well organised with experience of working to deadlines. They will possess a significant level of creativity and should demonstrate high levels of energy. A non-judgemental attitude, flexibility, patience, good listening skills and the ability to relate well to people are essential.  

The Programme Mentor will be required to travel within Longford town and must have their own transport and a full clean driving licence.
